The basis and sustenance of any relationship are love, respect and trust the most important amongst other attributes; nurtured on a mutual basis. Together many a battle can be fought and life with its ups and downs is doable. In a practical world that we live, it would be dishonest to say love along with the other attributes, is enough to sustain oneself. In this material world of ours we need material things such as money to survive. It is no surprise then in our country the customary arranged marriage takes care of lot of these issues and help many individuals build their lives upon the basic essentials. The probability of success of a marriage is higher once a firm foundation is provided and by no means surefire.
It is a rare and quite unheard of where an individual decides to create a relationship ignoring not only the dearth of all the essentials but also the reciprocity of her love.
It is journey of girl who falls in love with who she considers her love for the sake of love and decides to give it a permanency by marrying her love for love. Instead what she gets is told in the following………
She was the epitome of brightness
Her second nature being happiness
That was then……….
Almost a decade ago
Now
She feels shattered
Also known as battered
Trapped in a burrow
Looking down upon her is a dark shadow
Her eyes still have sparkle
Her face eager to tackle
Radiating in the flicker of light
She is musing over her plight
Standing in that pit
Searching for her grit
Thoughts racing in her mind
A decade to rewind
Then……..
A decade ago
“I see myself far away
Cannot remember the day
Blurred is the instant
When the fall was instant
Standing here in this hole
Quite certain it was a fall
Falling in love with you
To be close to you
Was always one sided
Always felt lop sided
Blinded was my mind
Failed to decipher your mind
Although I was being told
That was imprudent and bold
For others could see through you
Did I care! Still wanted you
Loved you so much
Yearning was such
Willing to walk your walk
Ignoring your taunting talk
Bending over my back
Must have put my brains on the rack
Oh! What was I thinking!
Was I even blinking!
To be told, I was the luckiest girl in the world
An arrogant proposal to this day unheard
When I was showed the benevolence
Of being ordained into priest class, must have been in trance
Little did I realize my fat pay-check!
One of the many cards from the deck
Was my passport to the pleasing reception!
Gradually realized it is full of deception
Had no clue regarding the nature or extent of expectation
Nevertheless there was always subtle indication
Often left to myself, alone in the world of devour
Always leaning back on parental home in needy hour
Tried to ignore the blaming, accusing and rages
All those were the mind games, could not fathom in ages
Always hoping things will change
Sight of a happy home in a certain range
Never had a finger on the string causing so much discord
Kept on breaking all my ties and you also wanted severed my umbilical cord
For the very same family that has always been supporting
Swallowed my anguish watching your loathing
Most of all love and things given to you on a platter
In return you have only shattered a sister and a daughter
I was in love, enthralled
Many a thing went un-observed
I was in love, head over heels
Too numb to all the feels
I was in love, with all my trust
Wishing away the wrath you thrust
Now……
A decade later
Standing in this pit
Searching for my grit
Groping my senses
Grasping the nuances
Miseries aside
Love has not died
No regrets I loved you
To love is not you
Love you never knew
With a heavy heart I rue
For you never saw the light
Your limitations caused me my plight
I have paid my dues
For loving you
Dark shadow is what you have become
This relationship for you seems cumbersome
The ray of hope still sparkles
Giving me the strength to tackle
With your hate you created a pit
I will stand my ground with my grit
Out of the pit, I will stand my ground
Help spread hope around
I refuse to shatter
I will definitely not be battered”

DTE
Reciprocity of love - the most important ingredient in a marriage, without which it's a recipe for disaster.
Love, misplaced trust, the anguish, the despair and the determination - all come out so neatly in your poem.

hi meera,
i know what you mean, the story is being narrated from within an abyss (the journey of she got there) thus the title.... into an abyss
and because of the presence of that grit....... hope is alive!!
thanks for your lovely comments

dear bina,
yes i know what you mean, i have written a paper on domestic violence (for masters) and seen lot of cases as a physician in india.... not labeled as victims of violence of course.
it is disabling to be aware of so much and be of so little help.... as you know the perpetrator takes advantage of the power and uses the nature of the relationship as the shield.... a rodent like behavior!!!
it is quite disheartening
